We are in the midst of the holiday season, which makes this a perfect time to talk about how families came together and entertained themselves during their leisure time. This month, our holiday installation shows how the American family spent leisure time during the 19th and early 20th century, with a whimsical selection of cast iron, tin, wind-up and carved wooden banks, trains and soldiers made between 1850 and 1945. It is sure to remind you that, no matter what the century, family time is precious and also makes for great memories and stories.
This month we're offering many opportunities to make memories of your own. Meet guest authors at our history book club and Macy's Story Time, cook delicious Dutch New Amsterdam holiday confections with historic gastronomist Sarah Lohman, or explore the museum with our “Season of Light” scavenger hunt.
We hope you will make us part of your winter family activities this month and attend our Family Benefit Party on January 25, where there will be engaging hands-on history activities, performances, and re-enactors as well as delicious treats as you discover the characters and events that shaped our nation’s history.
