Biographies

Louise Mirrer
President and CEO, New-York Historical Society

Louise Mirrer joined the New-York Historical Society as President and CEO in June 2004. Under her guidance, New-York Historical is reinvigorating its commitment to foster greater public understanding of history and its impact on the world of today, to support and encourage historical scholarship, and to develop education initiatives for young people, students, and adults. Dr. Mirrer is leading New-York Historical’s campaign for a major renovation of its landmark building on Central Park West, which so far has raised more than $100 million.

Under Dr. Mirrer’s direction, the New-York Historical Society has launched a series of groundbreaking exhibitions, including Slavery in New York; New York Divided: Slavery and the Civil War; A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls; French Founding Father: Lafayette’s Return to Washington’s America, and Grant and Lee in War and Peace; and a rich array of intellectually engaging lectures, debates and family programs.

Dr. Mirrer also inaugurated the “Saturday Academy,” an American history enhancement program for high-school students, and a new Graduate Institute on Constitutional History.

Prior to joining the New-York Historical Society, Dr. Mirrer was CUNY Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.  At CUNY, she spearheaded the U.S. History Initiative, which strengthened the University’s American history curriculum through faculty development, online course materials, and increased enrollment in American history courses. Dr. Mirrer’s research focuses on how the creation of historical narratives helps to shape and define social institutions.

In recent years, Dr. Mirrer has been honored with the Woman of Distinction Medal, League of Women Voters, 2007; Dean’s Medal, CUNY Honors College, 2005; Education and Student Advocacy Award, Hostos Community College, 2005; President’s Medal, CUNY Graduate Center, 2004; Leadership Award, Asian-American Research Institution, 2003; New York Post’s “50 Most Influential Women in New York,” 2003; Citation of Honor, Queens Borough President’s Office, 2001; Women Making History Award, Queensborough Community College, 2001; and the YWCA “Women Achievers” Award, 2000. In 2007 she was made an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge.

Roger Hertog
Chairman, New-York Historical Society

Roger Hertog has served as Chairman of the New-York Historical Society since 2006. Vice Chairman Emeritus of AllianceBernstein and former President and Chief Operating Officer of Sanford C. Bernstein & Company, he serves on the board of the New York Public Library, the New York Philharmonic and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.  In 2007, Mr. Hertog was awarded the National Humanities Medal for philanthropy.

Pam B. Schafler
Vice Chair, New-York Historical Society

Pam Schafler is Vice Chair of the New-York Historical Society Board of Trustees and Chair of the New-York Historical Society’s Chairman’s Council, a group dedicated to securing New-York Historical’s future as pre-eminent in American History. Ms. Schafler is actively involved in community organizations, and sits on the boards of The Gracie Mansion Conservancy and the 10 Gracie Square River Corporation.  She also serves on the National Executive Committee of the Anti-Defamation League, one of the nation’s premier civil rights and human relations agencies.  Ms. Schafler was an editor of The Papers of William Livingston, a federally and state funded project to collect, edit and publish five volumes of selected papers of the first governor of the State of New Jersey.

Joseph and Diana DiMenna

The DiMennas' primary philanthropic focus is on the arts, education and the development of children. They have been major supporters of the New-York Historical Society, making the lead gift for the creation of the DiMenna Children's History Museum to open November 2011; Orchestra of St. Luke’s, where they led in the development of the DiMenna Center for Classical Music; the Harlem Children’s Zone, Jazz at Lincoln Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, College Summit and the Robin Hood Foundation, among others. Joseph DiMenna is Managing Director of Zweig-DiMenna Associates, a New York-based hedge fund, and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New-York Historical Society, The Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Harlem Children’s Zone and Fairfield University. In addition, Mr. DiMenna was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2002 by the National Foundation for the Teaching of Entrepreneurship, an organization that promotes the teaching of business principles to students. Diana DiMenna is a board member of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Central Park Conservancy, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center and is a member of The Museum Advisory Council for The American Museum of Natural History.

Fred Wilson
Artist

Fred Wilson’s work has been featured in over 100 group exhibitions, including the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) as the American representative, the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition (1993), and the Fourth International Cairo Biennale (1992). He has had over 25 solo museum exhibitions internationally, and has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, among them, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Award (the "Genius Grant"), Chicago (1999). Fred Wilson is represented by The Pace Gallery, NY, and currently lives and works in New York City.

Ray H. Dovell, AIA
Principal, Platt Byard Dovell White Architects LLP

Ray H. Dovell began practicing architecture in 1980, working in the Middle East and as a designer for New York firms before joining Smotrich & Platt in 1984. He formed his own practice in 1987 and combined it with Platt & Byard in 1990. In addition to his architectural work, Mr. Dovell has a significant portfolio of furniture designs. He was a member of the AIA New York Chapter’s Zoning Committee and is active as a design critic at Columbia University, City College, and Pratt Institute.

Lee Skolnick, FAIA
Principal, Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership

Lee H. Skolnick seeks to synthesize art, science and architecture to create memorable and meaningful experiences, passionately developing and pursuing his philosophy of “design as interpretation.” Notable projects include the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, KY; Aileron: Center for Entrepreneurial Education in Dayton, OH; the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York; the Paley Center for Media in New York and Los Angeles; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga, TN among many others. He is the Founding Chairman of the board of Architecture Omi, in Ghent, NY; a Research Fellow in the Museum Studies Program at the University of Leicester, England and was elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 2003.
