EVENT DETAILS

The epic Battle of Gettysburg did not end the Civil War as Abraham Lincoln had hoped. In fact, the conflict lasted another two years, and more soldiers died after Gettysburg than before. Three Civil War historians explore what Union and Confederate commanders East and West, land and sea did next—and what they should have done.

SPEAKER BIOS

James M. McPherson, a distinguished American Civil War historian, is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his book, Battle Cry of Freedom and his latest book is War on the Waters: The Union and Confederate Navies, 1861-1865. John F. Marszalek is a Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Mississippi State University, executive director of the Ulysses S. Grant Association, and author of Sherman’s Other War. Harold Holzer (moderator) is a recipient of the National Humanities Medal and has written and edited more than 40 books on Lincoln and the Civil War, including The Civil War in 50 Objects.
