Volunteers play an important role in the operations of the New-York Historical Society. Volunteers work in a variety of departments including Education, Public Programs, Museum, Library and Development. We seek a diverse group of volunteers who can apply their skills, interests and experiences to a wide range of short-term and project-specific assignments. Public Programs Volunteers
The New-York Historical Society has an excellent volunteer opportunity for people who like to work with the public. For people who have strong interest in American History, Politics or Current Affairs, this opportunity will allow the volunteer to be an essential part of the team producing innovative public programs.
Our Public Programs Department is looking to recruit new volunteers to assist with their lectures, films, and concerts. Volunteers play an integral role in producing the New-York Historical Society's public programs series.
- Greeting, directing and ushering guests
- Working our Will Call (attendee registration) and information desks
- Assisting with book signings
- Signing up patrons for our mailing list
Opportunities are generally available early evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Public program volunteers must attend all assignments in business dress and report to Public Program staff members. Besides receiving regular volunteer benefits, those assigned to a particular program can attend that program for free.
The ideal candidate should:
- Have a friendly outgoing personality
- Be able to work in a crowded environment
- Have the flexibility to perform at more than one volunteer position
- Be able to stand or work on their feet for up to an hour at a time
- Be able to volunteer at least three times a month
Have wide availability on weekday evenings and weekend days
Must be able to begin volunteering immediately
