The New-York Historical Society offers DOE-approved Professional-Credit courses each July. These classes meet for 36 hours (Monday-Saturday, 10 am–5 pm) and carry three credits that can be applied toward teachers' 30-and-above salary differential. Courses will be listed and registration will be available on the After School Professional Development Program's site when the summer course catalog becomes available, typically in late spring. Courses fill up quickly, so register early!

Exploring the Art of History: Social Studies and Literacy through the Visual Arts

This course will help classroom educators to deepen and advance their students’ understanding of New York and American History by combining the extraordinary collections of the New-York Historical Society with the tools and principles of the visual arts. It will explore the interdisciplinary approach of two units from the Art of History program, a new New-York Historical Society School Outreach series that not only combines art history and the visual arts with the study of historical evidence, but is also rich with literacy activities and language-focused. This approach to learning supports the Common Core Standards for Literacy and History and helps fulfill the visual arts requirements for ArtsCount.

Participants will be introduced to theories of artistic development and lesson planning strategies for interdisciplinary, art experiences for children and young adolescents. Participants will receive the opportunity to explore particular mediums from the NYDOE Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts (drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture), becoming familiar with the mediums’ properties and processes. In addition the course will address ways in which the interdisciplinary approach of the Art of History supports differentiated instruction for struggling readers, ELL students, and for the Gifted and Talented. The course will culminate by examining the exhibition process, exploring the steps in creating a classroom exhibition and power that they have in influencing learning in the school and community at large. Participants will receive scholarly resources and reproductions of works of art, and they will hear from guest speakers and go on guided tours (N-YHS galleries and the DiMenna Children’s History Museum). Suggested for elementary classroom teachers. Middle school classroom and/or social studies teachers are also welcome.
