The subject was the son of Christian Schell, a merchant, and Elizabeth (Hughes) Schell of Rhinebeck, New York, and the husband of the donor. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and thereafter, as a corporation lawyer, became one of the leading figures on Wall Street. According to the date which the artist himself inscribed, this portrait was painted the year following the subject's death; therefore, it must have been executed from photographs.
