Gallery Label: 
The subject was a New York merchant and sailmaker. He was in business at 180 Front Street with Stephen Allen, later mayor of New York. He was a member of the New York Assembly (1814-15) and the Columbian Order (the Tammany Society). His portrait was a gift to the Society from his great-grandson.
