In the 1961 municipal election this Democratic "balanced ticket" of Robert F. Wagner (1910-1991) for Mayor, Abraham Beame (1906-2001) for Comptroller, and Paul R. Screvane (1914-2001) for President of the City Council defeated the Republicans. Wagner was Mayor from 1954-65; Beame later became Mayor from 1974-1977
