Metal holder for matchbooks; top is hinged to allow insertion of matchbook and retrieval of matches; rectangular void allows striking pad on matchbook to be exposed. Circular enamel medallion at center inscribed: "GRAMMAR SCHOOL/35/NOV. 20, 1924"

This souvenir was probably distributed at a reunion of the Thomas Hunter Association of P.S. No. 35 in New York City, founded to commemorate the educator Thomas Hunter. Hunter began his teaching career at P.S. 35 in 1850, organized the first evening high school in 1866, and founded the Normal College of New York City in 1869, now called Hunter College in his honor.
