American impressionist painter J. Alden Weir purchased a farm in rural Branchville (Ridgefield), Connecticut, in 1882. The summer retreat became a creative refuge for friends and fellow artists such as Albert Pinkham Ryder, John Twachtman, and Childe Hassam. This charcoal drawing was executed at Weir's Branchville farm.
