Manager of Institutional Giving

The New-York Historical Society Museum & Library (N-YHS), one of America’s pre-eminent cultural institutions and New York’s oldest museum, seeks a dynamic Manager of Institutional Giving to help maintain and develop the institution’s foundation, corporate, and government funding sources.  Reporting to the Director of Institutional Giving, the Manager of Institutional Giving has a broad range of fundraising, stewardship, and administrative responsibilities. In collaboration with the Director of Institutional Giving and an active Development Department, s/he has the opportunity to self-direct multiple priorities of an ambitious work plan to help achieve institutional fundraising goals.

In April 2017, N-YHS will reopen its Henry Luce III Center, unveiling a reimagined installation of historic treasures from the permanent collection, which will tell the American story through the lens of New York, as well as a custom-designed glass gallery showcasing the Museum’s preeminent collection of Tiffany lamps. The renovations will also establish the new Center for Women’s History—the first institution in the nation within the walls of a museum dedicated to this essential subject—and a new digital learning center for K – 12 museum education programs. The Manager of Institutional Giving will join a dynamic team working to secure essential support for a broad range of programs, exhibitions, and educational initiatives in these new spaces and throughout the institution.


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years related development experience
  • Demonstrated success in proposal writing and donor stewardship
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Research, editing, and keen problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple long-term assignments while managing tasks of immediate need
  • A creative thinker with a high level of energy and initiative
  • A self-motivated learner with the capability to gather information from a variety of sources
  • An enthusiasm for Development work and desire to take on new challenges
  • Interest in the humanities and the arts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Foundation Center Online
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend events

Essential Job Duties:

  • Craft grant proposals for submission to foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Research, identify, and develop outreach strategies for new institutional sources of funding for general operations, exhibitions, educational programs, museum and library initiatives, and capital projects
  • Develop overview materials and presentations to supplement funding requests and proposals
  • Monitor grant compliance and prepare detailed narrative and financial reports to government agencies as well as corporate and foundation donors
  • Oversee stewardship of a portfolio of current N-YHS program supporters and corporate member companies, cultivating new and existing relationships and identifying and spearheading opportunities for engagement
  • Work closely with programmatic staff as well as the Finance Department on proposal narratives, budget development, and reporting
  • Prepare all institutional gift acknowledgements
  • Maintain an organized proposal and reporting deadline calendar
  • Serve as an ambassador of the New-York Historical Society at special events
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as requested
