Augusta Clinton was the second daughter of Charles Alexander Clinton and Catherine (Hone) Clinton of New York. On September 25, 1856, she became the first wife of Thomas Lindall Winthrop (b. 1834) in St. Paul's Church, Poughkeepsie.
