Description
Mahogany Chippendale armchair with double serpentine crest rail with a central carved shell and slightly scrolled ears, interlaced pierced scroll splat, tapering stiles; trapezoidal slip seat; cabriole legs with carved shells on knees and ball and claw feet; slightly curved arms and supports (added later).

According to the accession records, this chair belonged to the donor's mother's family, the Bassetts of New Haven, CT. The chair and its mate were probably purchased by Miss Morgan's grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Bassett. This chair may have originally been a side chair, to which arms were added at a later date.
