William O'Dwyer won the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City in 1941 but was defeated in the general election by Fiorello H. La Guardia. He was elected mayor in 1945 as the candidate of the Democratic and American Labor parties. In 1949, Vincent R. Impellitteri became the acting mayor of New York City after the resignation of Mayor William O'Dwyer in 1950.
