Brass decorative sheriff badge; eagle at top of badge holding a banner inscribed with rhinestones "HUGH J. GRANT"; at center the New York City emblem encircled by inscription with rhinestones "SHERIFF/NEW YORK"; inscriptions on blue background; reverse inscribed "PRESENTED TO/SHERIFF/HUGH J. GRANT/BY HIS FRIENDS OF THE /19 ASSEMBLY DIST/JANUARY 1ST 1886"

Hugh J. Grant (1852-1910), with the backing of Tammany Hall, was elected mayor of New York City in 1888 and was reelected in 1890. He did not seek reelection in 1892 but sought it again in 1894 and was defeated. Prior to his position as Mayor of NYC he was elected sheriff of New York County in 1885.
