This ribbon was given to the donor by Frank Moore, an AIDS activist who helped create the red ribbon symbol for AIDS awareness. Moore was one of the first members of Visual AIDS, which launched the Red Ribbon project in 1990. The overlapping red ribbon, worn on lapels, has become an internationally-recognized representation of the struggle against AIDS. Moore died of complications from AIDS in 2002, at age 48.
