Event details

One president was a West Point-trained Mexican War veteran and a former Secretary of War. The other had virtually no military training except in a bloodless Indian war, yet emerged as the far greater commander-in-chief during the Civil War. Why the experienced Jefferson Davis faltered, while the untested Abraham Lincoln triumphed, remains one of the great mysteries of American history — as explored by this expert panel.

Speakers Bio(s)

McPherson is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University and the author of numerous books on the Civil War, including Battle Cry of Freedom, which won the Pulitzer Prize. William C. Davis is the author of Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour, as well as the on-camera senior consultant for 52 episodes of the Arts & Entertainment Network/History Channel series “Civil War Journal.” Harold Holzer (moderator) is a winner of the National Humanities Medal and the author, coauthor or editor of forty-two books on Lincoln and the Civil War era.
