Maira Kalman returns with her new children’s book Thomas Jefferson, whom she describes “optimistic and complex and tragic and wrong and courageous.” Families will listen to her read excerpts from the book—which aims to cover everything about Jefferson—as well as describe her research process, and hold a book signing.
Fans of this Founding Father will learn surprising facts, and children who are new to Jefferson will be introduced to a great and complex man. Kalman painterly illustrations add to the uniqueness and whimsy of the book.
Come early and go on a Thomas Jefferson scavenger hunt through the New-York Historical Society galleries. Find a bust of the president, learn about his role in the Louisiana Purchase, and marvel at his role in the founding of this nation. Families can enter a raffle where the prize is a signed copy of Maira Kalman’s book. The scavenger hunt is available from 10 am–6 pm.
“Her book is hypnotically charming, abounding with striking little details that children will remember. Who wouldn’t be enthralled to know that the author of the Declaration of Independence had blazing red hair, liked peas, counted to 10 when he was angry, and had his frayed coats mended with old socks?”
